Troubled ex-con Zack Taylor is haunted by the accidental death of his brother years before. Zack's guilt and anger have pushed him into a shadowy, wandering life, with little purpose and few attachments. When he hears of the death of his close friend Ben Sterling, a supposed gunshot suicide, Zack finds he now has a purpose-- to find out what happened. Then his purpose becomes an obsession.
Zack goes to Maine, where Ben died, and is a fish out of water, with no connections, no information, and no credibility. People don't want to talk about Ben's death, so Zack gets ever more frustrated, making enemies, getting into fights, and breaking the law in his search for the truth.
The only bright spot seems the potential for a relationship with a sympathetic nurse-- if he can control his violent streak. To draw out the killers, Zack offers himself as bait. But without a gun, he must rely on his wits and his physical skills to survive a dangerous game of drugs and death. Though managing a measure of justice, Zack is changed in the process, and must learn to live in a very different world.

Dale T. Phillips A Memory of Grief is a joyful ride through a fast-paced story with plenty of twists and turns. The protagonist, Zack Taylor, is a guy you wish you could have had as a big brother. He has a sense of honor, an actual conscience and gift for one-liners. His willingness to stick up for the small guy, to be a a righter-of-wrongs and to be able to kick butt because of his martial arts expertise makes him a thoroughly lovable character with whom you can sympathise for his constant hard-won battle with the bottle and bouts of rage. There is authentic (and sometimes hilarious) dialogue from the motley cast of characters found in this murder mystery. An extremely entertaining read with captivating descriptions of Maine and its denizens that makes one long for a road trip. Can't wait to read number #2 of the series. (less)Product details

Loved the sarcastic humor. Parts of it were a little over the top for me personally. Overall a really good book.

very pleased - is the go-to site!! Shop there all the time. I am never disappointed. Best for every thing.
A real page turner with likeable characters and a fast paced story line. Mr. Phillips holds your attention and keeps you reading as quickly as you can. I love the mixture of martial arts and mystery. I will definitely read more of his Zack Taylor books.
Story develops smoothly building suspense. The reader does not know what is coming next as the story unfolds. The characters were all different and believable and there were many as there are a couple of subplots that may or may not have been the main story.
All in all, well done.
Zack Taylor, the main character in this novel, is a good guy that is carrying some baggage and he's a bit rough around the edges. I couldn't help but like him. He wants to prove that his best friend didn't commit suicide--that he was murdered--and he goes about solving the crime and finding justice. He doesn't tend to go by the rules, either. I really enjoyed reading this book. It is well-written and engaging. And I am happy to know that this is the beginning of a series of books with Zack Taylor as the main character. Kudos to the author, Dale Phillips, and to Briona Glen Publishing.
